Planning a trip to New Zealand? Your journey is about to get a major upgrade. Air New Zealand is rolling out a $500 million retrofit across its fleet of Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. The Air New Zealand Dreamliner retrofit introduces a new standard of comfort and design across all cabins. Whether you fly economy or business, you’ll notice major improvements in comfort, privacy, and onboard features.
Let’s explore what’s changing—and how it will enhance your next long-haul flight.

This industry-first, nose-to-tail retrofit is a milestone in Air New Zealand’s 85-year history. Unlike a standard refresh, the airline is fully overhauling each of its 14 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. Every seat, screen, tray table, and light fixture is being replaced. The first aircraft—ZK-NZH—returned to service in May 2025 after a six-month rebuild in Singapore.
The goal? To elevate the flying experience across Business Premier, Premium Economy, and Economy with more comfort, privacy, and innovation.
The first upgraded aircraft launched on a short-haul route between Auckland and Brisbane, and on May 19, 2025, it began long-haul service from Auckland to San Francisco.
You’ll also spot these updated jets on:
As more planes complete their retrofits, expect to see them on additional North American and Pacific routes. Seven Dreamliners will be upgraded by the end of 2025, with all 14 completed by late 2026.

The Business Premier cabins are now more private, tech-savvy, and versatile.

Premium Economy travelers will notice a clear upgrade in design and personal space:
These features make Premium Economy ideal for those wanting elevated comfort without the full business-class fare.

Economy travelers are not left out—far from it. The new Economy cabin delivers surprising improvements:
And yes, the Sky Pantry is back—grab drinks or snacks anytime during your flight.
In a world-first, Air New Zealand will introduce Skynest: lie-flat sleeping pods in economy class. Launching in 2026, these six sleep pods can be booked in four-hour time blocks and include:
This is a game-changer for travelers on ultra-long-haul flights.
Flying to New Zealand often means a long haul—but Air New Zealand is making the journey significantly more enjoyable. The Dreamliner retrofit blends modern design with practical upgrades across every cabin.
Whether you’re flying for business, adventure, or a special occasion, this new experience offers more space, smarter features, and better rest from takeoff to landing.
