Custom Travel Itineraries to New Zealand since 1990
In April 2025, Virginie, a member of our team, traveled to New Zealand to attend the country’s largest international tourism showcase. During her visit, she explored some of the most beloved destinations and experiences that our travelers enjoy, and uncovered a few exciting new finds that we can’t wait to share.
Her journey began in Auckland and soon led her to the lush landscapes of Waiheke Island, where food, wine, art, and nature come together in a truly magical way.

Virginie started her day with a cozy breakfast in downtown Auckland, then took a short stroll to the ferry terminal. She caught the 9:00 am ferry across the Hauraki Gulf, where the misty skies made for a calm and peaceful trip to the island.
Pro Tip: During peak summer, always reserve your ferry seats in advance since lines can be long. From April to October, reservations aren’t available, but it’s still wise to arrive early.

Waiheke Island offers more than just scenery; it offers depth. Virginie joined a small-group guided tour that brought the island’s natural beauty and rich stories to life.
She and her group wandered through native bush, learning how locals use flax, Kawa Kawa, and other plants for healing. Towering Kauri trees provided a majestic canopy overhead.
She and her group wandered through native bush, learning how locals use plants like flax (a strong, fibrous plant often woven into practical items) and kawakawa (a native leaf valued for its gentle healing properties) for healing. Towering kauri trees rose above them, creating a majestic canopy overhead.
Other highlights included:
They also visited a sculpture garden, where outdoor art and quiet surroundings offered a moment of reflection.

No trip to Waiheke is complete without sampling its culinary treasures. Virginie and her group spent the afternoon savoring:

One of the more active options on Waiheke is a bush walk, which can be tailored in length but often involves natural trails through forested terrain. Virginie noted:
“Bush walk (especially day-long walks) not for everybody – nature paths – dirt and roots – need good shoes – lots of steep hills.”
It’s an immersive way to experience the island’s environment, but travelers should be prepared for uneven paths and elevation changes. Good footwear and a moderate fitness level are recommended.

After returning to Auckland by ferry, Virginie ended her day with a relaxed dinner in the city. Her standout dish? A flavorful venison plate that combined gourmet taste with excellent value.
Waiheke Island blends culture, cuisine, and coastal beauty in a way few places can. Whether you’re sipping olive oil in a quiet grove, exploring Maori carvings, or raising a glass at a vineyard with city views in the background, every moment feels like a world away.
