Custom Travel Itineraries to New Zealand since 1990
Worth considering on your trip to New Zealand is spending time in the capital city of Wellington. We suggest packing a pair of comfy shoes, as this compact city is best explored by foot. Some will refer to Wellington as the New Zealand version of San Francisco. And no matter how much time you have, you will find plenty to keep you occupied and inspired. Here are a few highlights of the city to consider- great for families and multi-generational travellers as well.

Wine & Cuisine Touring
The Matakana Coast is a relatively new wine region to New Zealand. Home since the 1970s to passionate growers who have since cultivated a diverse selection of grape varietals. From crisp Chardonnay and Pinot Gris to more robust Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, wine touring in Matakana will offer something for every palate.
While some smaller cellar doors will require an appointment, if time is short, you can visit The Vintry Wine Bar. It’s a one-stop shop for tasting a variety of local wines. Combining lunch at a winery, participating in a blending class, or taking the family to visit and tour an oyster farm are all fun ways to add to your day of touring in this beautiful area.
Boutique Shops and Local Art
The Matakana Coast has a haven for art enthusiasts for many years. Explore a thriving scene with works ranging from paintings and sculptures to jewelry and textiles. Discover creations by local, national, and international artists in boutique galleries and design stores.
A few classic ways to capture your artistic spirit is by visiting world-class sculpture trails like Sculptureum and Brick Bay or by stopping into Morris & James Pottery. In the village you can browse unique design stores for a special gift or meet local artisans at open studio events.
Throughout small towns in New Zealand you will find small farmers markets. Usually held on Saturday mornings, we recommend visiting to become a local for a bit and browse fresh and local artisan produce. Matakana Country Park has a market on select Sundays which is more of an arts and crafts market, as well as a night market on the last Friday of the month for food trucks.

Farm Tours and On the Water Fun for the Family
If in this area with family there are a few fun day trips everyone may find fun. Sheepworld is an interactive park that allows visitors to see sheep shearing shows, feed friendly animals, and explore a beautiful eco-trail through native bush. Kids will love the playground and enjoy a bite at the on-site cafe. Located Sheepworld is committed to showcasing farm life and providing excellent care to their animals.
Additionally, the Goat Island Marine Reserve offers Glass Bottom Tours. There you can join a boat or paddle a clear kayak to see marine life through the glass floor. Diving and snorkeling are also available.
Cultural Day Trip
The Kauri Museum is an easy day trip from this area or can be visited while in transit from the Northland. Located halfway between Auckland and the Bay of Islands, this museum tells the important story of New Zealand’s giant kauri tree (Agathis australis). Explore exhibits celebrating the mighty kauri and the people who shaped the region, including Maori of the Kaipara, European pioneers, foresters, and local families. Learn about the history of kauri gum digging, farming, and forestry, and plan your visit to experience this unique museum.
