Discovering Taupō: A Genuine Kiwi Adventure (NZ Famil Trip)

Thrilling adventures, Cultural depth, and Warm hospitality

What does it really feel like to explore Taupō? Not just as a tourist, but as someone diving into its landscape, culture, and experiences with fresh eyes? Earlier this year, Virginie, our team member, set out on a famil trip with Love Taupō to do just that.

Over three packed days, she discovered what makes this central North Island destination so memorable: thrilling adventures, rich Māori traditions, geothermal beauty, and welcoming hospitality. Her journey gives an authentic, firsthand look at Taupō’s top experiences and why it should be on every traveler’s radar.

Orakei Korako: A Walk into Another World

Virginie’s second visit to Orakei Korako was no less magical than the first. Guided by Nik, who grew up on the land, the walk through bubbling geothermal terrain and native bush offered a deep connection to nature. While the cooler, cloudy weather changed the visual palette, the experience remained rich. Don’t miss the cafe! The homemade soup and pies were a hit with the group.

Huka Falls Jet: Thrills and Views

Nothing beats seeing the mighty Huka Falls up close, except maybe getting splashed while doing 360-degree spins on a jet boat. Though the crew was soaked from the waist down (rain boots highly recommended), everyone agreed it was worth it. Virginie noted it’s suitable for all ages, with informative commentary and Maori cultural insights along the way.

Wairakei Terraces: Nature and Culture Combined

One of the highlights of Virginie’s visit was soaking in the hot pools at Wairakei Terraces. Surrounded by steam, natural rock features, and native bush, these adult-only pools offer a peaceful and rejuvenating experience. Each pool has a different temperature, and the silica-rich waters feel smooth and calming on the skin. Although heavy rain kept the group from trying the hot pools, they’re a definite must for future visits. She also explored the nearby geothermal walkway and cultural displays, but the bathing experience was what truly stood out.

Memorable Stays in Taupo

Throughout the trip, Virginie experienced a range of accommodations that blended comfort, character, and local charm. From lakefront views and forest hideaways to boutique villas and luxury lodges, each place offered its own unique appeal. Whether you’re looking for peace and privacy, rustic charm, or modern elegance, there’s something here to suit every style of traveler.

Unique Experiences on the Water and in the Air

A private boat ride across the calm waters of Lake Taupō led Virginie to the famous Maori rock carvings. The scenic journey, combined with a touch of luxury and great company, made this an unforgettable highlight.

Soaring above snow-dusted volcanoes and expansive national parkland, the scenic flight offered breathtaking perspectives. A thrilling and photogenic experience Virginie and the group described as one of their trip favorites.

Family Fun and Local Flavours

  • The Tongariro National Trout Center gives kids the chance to catch their own trout, learn about sustainability, and enjoy the outdoors. Virginie sampled freshly smoked trout and explored interactive exhibits, noting how fun and educational the center is.
  • Perfect for a rainy day, the Huka Honey Hive features honey tastings, wellness products, and delicious ice cream. Virginie enjoyed learning about different types of honey and their natural benefits.
  • The colorful sculpture garden and locally inspired glass artwork at Lava Glass added a creative flair to the trip. Though glassblowing was closed for the season, the visit still offered vibrant photo opportunities and a relaxing lunch.

Cultural Walk to Huka Falls

Virginie’s cultural experience with Snow, a local Māori guide and tribal representative, was deeply personal and moving. This guided walk near Huka Falls offered rich storytelling, insight into Māori history, native plants, and the spiritual connection to the land.

Snow’s warmth and passion for sharing his culture was contagious. His family-run initiative offers more than just a walk; it’s a cultural immersion. Depending on your interests, experiences can include traditional weaving workshops, kapa haka performances, and even a hangi meal at his home. Virginie ended the walk with a special blessing of her pounamu stones, a moment she described as both grounding and emotional.

For those looking to connect with the soul of New Zealand, this experience offers a powerful window into Māori tradition and identity.
