Great Journeys New Zealand unveiled their new Scenic Plus carriage, designed to provide passengers a higher level of comfort while taking in the country’s stunning landscapes. This lux carriage has unique features meticulously designed over three years specifically for this service. It boasts more comfortable seating, wide panoramic windows and artistic details to help enrich your travel experience.

A Few Details and What to Expect:

  • Warm Welcome: Similar to business class, as soon as you step on board the train the team will greet you personally and help you find your seat while showing you the convenient amenities like storage spaces and coat racks.
  • Social Dining: Seats are arranged two by two with a shared table to enjoy gourmet meals prepared with fresh, local ingredients, all served on crisp white tablecloths.
  • Symbolic Design Touches: Keep an eye out for unique artistic details including an interior which is adorned with the “coiling bird” design theme, the watchful “eye of the bird” guardian sculpture, the majestic Toroa (albatross) backbone along the ceiling, and a flock of 56 birds symbolizing each passenger on board.
  • Tech-Savvy Travel: Stay informed and entertained with the Great Journeys New Zealand app which uses GPS to provide stories and information about the landscapes you’re passing through.

Integrating the Trail into your Trip

We will provide a majority of our clients with a rental vehicle while in New Zealand. This allows them to self-drive to more remote locations in the country and make day trips on their own time. However, for those less comfortable with driving or simply wish to experience the landscape from a train, we are happy to integrate experiences like the Tranz Alpine or Coastal Pacific train.

Even if only breaking up your drive time in New Zealand for a few days, consider the train as a way to travel between a couple of key points on the South Island. Our favorites are down the east coast via Kaikoura and into Christchurch and across the Southern Alps to the rustic West Coast.

It will be in your best interest to plan ahead! There aren’t many seats in the Scenic Plus carriage, and it is popular (especially in the busy season)!
