New Zealand is no stranger to unforgettable experiences. But when the refined luxury of Huka Lodge meets the artistic brilliance of Lava Glass, something magical happens. It’s not just dinner—it’s a story told in color, craftsmanship, and culinary elegance.
As part of Huka Lodge’s spectacular $20 million refurbishment, the award-winning lodge turned to Taupō-based Lava Glass to elevate its dining experience in a truly local way. The result? A limited collection of 70 handblown glass dishes, created exclusively for Huka Lodge’s private dining spaces.
But this isn’t just about tableware. It’s about New Zealand artistry meeting timeless luxury.

The Art Behind the Plate
Lava Glass isn’t your average art studio. Nestled in the heart of the North Island’s volcanic plateau, it’s a must-see for travelers exploring Taupō. Founded by glass artist Lynden Over and Christine Robb, the studio has gained international acclaim for its vivid, contemporary glass designs inspired by the natural world—from fiery lava flows to tranquil alpine lakes.
And what makes this studio even more remarkable? It’s the first certified carbon-neutral glassblowing studio in the world. Lava Glass runs on clean electricity, has replaced traditional gas furnaces with electric ones, and offsets emissions by planting native trees around New Zealand. It’s art that doesn’t just look good—it does good.
When Art and Dining Come Together
To craft the new pieces, Lava Glass collaborated with Executive Chef Ryan Ward of Huka Lodge. The goal was to design dishes that complement the lodge’s seasonal cuisine and elegant atmosphere. Each glass plate was thoughtfully shaped to enhance presentation and create a more immersive dining experience.
Now, as guests enjoy a multi-course meal at Huka Lodge, they are surrounded by beauty in every detail. The custom glassware adds color and depth to the table, enriching both the visual and culinary journey.
