If you have ever dreamed of lying flat on a long-haul flight without paying for a business class ticket, Air New Zealand is about to make that dream a reality. The airline is set to launch the world’s first economy sleep pods, called the Economy Skynest, on select ultra long-haul flights from November 2026. Bookings open on 18 May 2026, so it pays to plan ahead.
The Skynest is a dedicated sleeping area featuring six individual lie-flat pods arranged in a bunk-style configuration. Located between the Economy and Premium Economy cabins on Air New Zealand’s new Boeing 787-9 aircraft, each pod is designed to give passengers a genuine rest mid-flight rather than a compromise. Passengers book a four-hour session as a paid add-on to their existing Economy or Premium Economy seat, with sessions priced from $495 USD.
To put that in context, a one-way economy fare on the Auckland to New York route runs roughly $900. Adding a Skynest session brings the total to around $1,400, which is still a fraction of what a business class ticket would cost on one of the world’s longest commercial routes. At nearly 9,000 miles and approximately 17 hours of flying time, the Auckland to New York service is exactly the kind of journey where a proper lie-down makes a real difference.
Air New Zealand developed the Skynest over several years and tested it with more than 200 customers before finalising the design. Each pod measures approximately 203cm (around 6 feet 7 inches) in length and 64cm (about 25 inches) wide at the shoulder, tapering toward the feet. That makes it generously sized for most travelers, though taller passengers will want to factor in the tapered footend when climbing in and out.
Inside, each pod comes with a full-length mattress, fresh linen, a pillow, a blanket, and a privacy curtain. Bedding is refreshed between every session by the cabin crew, who have a 30-minute changeover window. Passengers also receive a complimentary “Nestcessities” amenity kit that includes an eye mask, earplugs, socks, a toothbrush and toothpaste, and Aotea hand cream. Each pod also features ambient and reading lighting, a ventilation outlet, USB-A and USB-C charging ports, a personal storage space at the head of the pod, and a seatbelt that passengers wear over their blanket so they can sleep undisturbed even if the seatbelt sign comes on.
There is also no need to set an alarm. When a session ends, the pod lighting gradually turns on, and a crew member will wake anyone still asleep.
Skynest is available to passengers aged 15 and older who hold an Economy or Premium Economy ticket. Only one session per passenger per flight can be booked, and sessions are scheduled outside meal service windows.
It is worth knowing that getting into the pod requires some physical agility. The top nests sit about 1.6 metres from the ground and require climbing a small ladder. The middle nests sit at around one metre and can generally be accessed from standing. The bottom nests sit just 10cm off the floor and require bending down to enter. Passengers who need easier access are encouraged to look for availability in the middle or bottom pods.
Bookings open online on 18 May 2026 for travel beginning in November 2026. Air New Zealand has also indicated that in the future, passengers already in the air will be able to book a remaining pod session if slots are still available.
Long flight time has historically been one of the most cited barriers to visiting New Zealand, particularly for travelers coming from the United States East Coast. The Auckland to New York route is one of the longest in the world, and Air New Zealand has consistently invested in making that journey more comfortable. The airline introduced its Economy Skycouch, a row of seats that converts into a lie-flat space, back in 2011, and that product has since been adopted in various forms by other carriers including United Airlines.
The Skynest takes that concept significantly further by offering a fully private, dedicated sleeping space with proper bedding and amenities. For travelers who are curious about New Zealand but have hesitated because of the travel distance, this is a development worth watching closely.
