New Zealand Bound? Must-Know Tips Before You Go!

Whether it’s your first visit or a return adventure, these essential tips will help you navigate the unique culture, stunning landscapes, and travel logistics.

Electrical Current

New Zealand uses type I electrical outlets with a voltage of 240V and a frequency of 50Hz. This means visitors from North America will need a voltage converter for their 110V devices.

An adapter for your US or European plugs is also a must. Don’t worry, most laptops and phones already have built-in converters, so you’ll likely only need an adapter. The good news is, many lodges even offer adapters in their rooms!

Cash or Card?

While credit cards are widely accepted throughout New Zealand, it’s always a good idea to carry some local currency (NZD) for smaller purchases or emergencies

Local Language

New Zealand boasts three official languages: English, Māori, and New Zealand Sign Language. But fret not, English is the most widely spoken, so communication will be a breeze.

Tipping Etiquette

Gratuities aren’t mandatory in New Zealand. However, if you feel the lodge staff or your guide went above and beyond, a tip of $100-150 USD per day for the guide and $50-75 USD per night for the staff is greatly appreciated. This amount will be shared among everyone who contributed to your amazing stay.

For restaurants, a small tip of a few dollars or 10% of the bill is perfectly acceptable.

Travel Insurance: Tranquility for Your Trip

Unexpected events happen, so we highly recommend purchasing trip cancellation insurance. We can even connect you with our preferred partner, Global Rescue, to get a quote.

Local Time Zone

New Zealand operates on New Zealand Standard Time (GMT+12), so be prepared to adjust your watch upon arrival. Luckily, there’s just one time zone throughout the country!

Fishing Licenses

If you’re planning on fishing, you’ll need a non-resident full season license. You can grab one online at www.fishandgame.org.nz before your trip, or the lodge can help you get it upon arrival. Keep in mind, this license covers all areas except the Taupo Region.

Daily designated waters licenses might also be required depending on your fishing spots. The lodge team will handle purchasing these ($40 NZD per person per day) once your itinerary is finalized. Any fees will be added to your final bill.

Special Requests

Be sure to fill out the guest information form you received. This helps us tailor your experience! We especially want to know about any food allergies, physical limitations, or medical needs you might have. If you need another copy of the form or prefer to share this information over the phone, just let us know.

Don’t be shy! Share any special requests you might have, like your favorite food, wine, or type of fishing you prefer. We’ll do our best to personalize your trip and make it truly unforgettable.
