Discover the Kawarau Gorge Trail: A Spectacular New Zealand Adventure
The Kawarau Gorge Trail is an unforgettable 32-kilometer route weaving through Central Otago’s dramatic landscapes. Connecting Queenstown through the Nevis Bluff to the renowned Central Otago trails, this trail offers breathtaking scenery, rich history, and seamless trail connections, making it a must-visit destination for outdoor enthusiasts.

Kawarau Gorge Trail: A One-of-a-Kind Experience
Construction is set to begin in the summer of 2023/24. The project will bring to life a trail unlike any other in the region. One highlight includes two unique projects at Nevis Bluff, led by Waka Kotahi. A winding path will weave beneath the road, hugging the dramatic Nevis Bluff. Additionally, a remarkable underpass beneath the State Highway will open up previously unreachable sections of the Kawarau Gorge. These features will provide more opportunities to take in jaw-dropping views and experience the rugged beauty of the area like never before.
Suspension Bridges and Breathtaking Kawarau River Views
As you navigate the trail, the sheer magnificence of the Kawarau River will unfold before you. Two suspension bridges will allow for breathtaking crossings, offering a rare and uninterrupted perspective of the gorge. Unlike the highway, which runs along the opposite side, this trail will bask in the sunlight. It will wind through the gorge, providing a truly immersive experience in nature.

Gibbston Valley & Bannockburn Wineries Along the Trail
One of the most enticing aspects of the Kawarau Gorge Trail is its proximity to Gibbston Valley and Bannockburn, two world-renowned wine destinations. These regions are home to some of New Zealand’s finest wineries. Here, you can indulge in locally produced wines and experience the warm hospitality that makes Central Otago so special. Whether you’re a wine enthusiast or just looking for a relaxing stop along the journey, these vineyards add an unforgettable touch to the adventure.
Step Back in Time: Gold Mining and Māori History
Beyond its natural beauty, the trail is steeped in history. A visit to the Goldfields Mining Centre offers a fascinating glimpse into the past. Stories of early gold miners, innovative power generation projects, and even tales of rabbit hunting come to life here. The area also holds cultural significance as an ancient route traveled by early Māori, adding another layer of depth to the journey.
Seamless Connection to Queenstown Trails
The Southern Lakes Trails team is collaborating with Queenstown Trails to ensure a seamless link between the Kawarau Gorge Trail and the broader Queenstown trail network. At the end of Gibbston Valley, adventurers can continue their journey through Queenstown’s breathtaking landscapes. This connection makes the trail part of an even greater network of outdoor exploration.
