If you’re looking for a short but rewarding hike in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park, the Tasman Glacier View Track should be on your list. This 1.5 km round-trip walk offers breathtaking views of New Zealand’s longest glacier, the Tasman Glacier, along with its terminal lake, floating icebergs, and the dramatic mountain landscape.

The Hike: What to Expect
Starting from the Blue Lakes car park, follow the track past the Blue Lakes shelter and gradually ascend to a viewpoint on the moraine wall. The walk includes about 300 steps, leading to an elevated vantage point where you can take in sweeping views of the Haupapa/Tasman Glacier and the surrounding peaks. Though the track is short and rated easy, the climb up the steps may require a moderate effort.
If you have extra time, consider a side trip to the Blue Lakes, where you can cool off with a swim in the summer months.

Getting There
From State Highway 80, turn onto Tasman Valley Road just before reaching Aoraki/Mount Cook Village. Drive about 7 km to the Blue Lakes car park, where the trail begins.
Safety Tips
- Wear sturdy footwear, as the track includes uneven rock steps.
- Be prepared for sudden weather changes; alpine conditions can shift rapidly.
- Stay out of the glacial lakes—Hooker and Tasman Lakes remain dangerously cold at around 3°C year-round, posing a risk of hypothermia.
- Avoid walking on or climbing icebergs, as they can be unstable and tip unexpectedly.
The Ever-Changing Glacier Landscape
At approximately 22 km long, the Tasman Glacier is New Zealand’s longest glacier. However, like glaciers worldwide, it is shrinking rapidly, retreating over 100 meters per year. Tasman Lake, which only began forming in 1974, has since expanded significantly and now accommodates commercial boat and kayak tours. The towering moraines left behind mark the glacier’s past extent, offering a striking reminder of the ongoing impact of climate change.

Plan Your Visit
Although the Tasman Glacier View Track is a short hike, its spectacular scenery makes it a must-visit for anyone exploring Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park. Whether you’re captivated by the sight of icebergs floating in the glacial lake or the rugged alpine peaks, this trail delivers an unforgettable experience in just 30 minutes.
