The Track Experience

The track begins with a gentle walk through valley farmland. After 15 minutes, you’ll cross a swing bridge over the West Matukituki River—your gateway to the wild.

From there, the trail climbs gradually through a mossy beech forest and into open alpine meadows. At the Lower Lookout, you’ll already have stunning views. Continue to the Upper Lookout for front-row seats to the Rob Roy Glacier—a dramatic hanging glacier spilling over cliff faces.

Keep an eye out (and an ear) for avalanches tumbling down the ice face—completely safe to view from the track, but thrilling to witness.

Wildlife Encounter

This area is home to the kea, New Zealand’s cheeky alpine parrot. They’re curious, intelligent, and occasionally destructive. Keep your gear zipped and your snacks hidden.
