The West Coast of New Zealand is a breathtakingly rugged region, celebrated for its dramatic landscapes, untouched forests, and stunning coastal scenery. With towering mountains, hidden beaches, and rich biodiversity, it offers an unparalleled experience for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike. For those exploring the South Island, we highly recommend adding the West Coast to your itinerary—its raw beauty and diverse attractions make it a destination you won’t want to miss.
One of the best ways to explore the West Coast is via self-drive and taking time to embark on one of the many self-guided walks available. These walks range from short and easy trails suitable for families to more challenging hikes for experienced trekkers. This blog post includes a few of our favorites.
The Ōparara Basin, a relic of the ancient seabed, was formed 350 million years ago. The stunning limestone formations, including the Ōparara Arches, were shaped by natural processes. While the arches were marked on old maps, their hidden beauty remained undiscovered until the late 1970s when Forest Service staff stumbled upon the entrance to Honeyflow Stream.
Hidden within the lush rainforests of Kahurangi National Park, the Ōpārara Arches offer a unique and unforgettable experience. A short, accessible walk leads you through a stunning landscape of towering limestone formations, diverse ecosystems, and the tranquil Ōpārara River. Located just 23 kilometers north of Karamea, this 2-kilometer trail takes approximately 50 minutes to complete.
Another great walk we encourage you to discover the windswept beauty of Cape Foulwind, a dramatic headland overlooking the Tasman Sea. This walk is near the town of Westport, which is a small town nestled between a stunning coastline, rolling hills, and towering mountains. At Cape Foulwind you can enjoy a scenic walk along the rocky coastline, where the power of the ocean is on full display. Witness the fascinating behavior of New Zealand fur seals, especially during the breeding season. Located 16 kilometers west of Westport, the 3.4-kilometer walk takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes one way, or 2.5 hours return. A shorter 15-minute option leads to a viewpoint overlooking the seal colony.
The Pancake Rocks, located in Punakaiki, are a testament to the power of natural forces. Formed over 30 million years ago from microscopic fragments of marine life, these limestone formations were solidified under immense pressure and later uplifted by seismic activity. The forces of erosion, including rain, wind, and seawater, sculpted the unique shapes we see today.
These incredible rock formations and blowholes are a stunning natural attraction on the Great Coast Road. This easy, paved walkway leads you through regenerating forest to the iconic rock formations, where powerful waves create dramatic blowholes. Don’t miss the opportunity to witness this mesmerizing spectacle, especially at high tide. Punakaiki is located on SH 6, halfway between Westport and Greymouth. The 20-minute loop walk is a must-see for any visitor to the region.
Certainly one of our favorite walks is the Paparoa Track, which is actually one of New Zealand’s dedicated “Great Walks.” With two short and accessible walks along the scenic Pororari River, these easy trails start near the Paparoa National Park Visitor Centre and offer stunning views of the gorge, limestone boulders, and a suspension bridge. Enjoy a 1.5-hour return walk through the gorge or a 3-hour loop that includes additional highlights. Punakaiki is located on SH6, halfway between Westport and Greymouth. The tracks start from either the Paparoa National Park Visitor Centre or 1km north at the Pororari River car park.
