If you’re visiting Queenstown and looking for a hike that delivers big views and an even bigger sense of achievement, the Ben Lomond Track is a must. Towering 1,748 meters above town, this full-day adventure leads you from lakeside forest to alpine summit—with jaw-dropping scenery every step of the way.
While it’s one of the region’s most popular hikes, don’t underestimate it. With over 1,400 meters of elevation gain, rapid weather shifts, and no amenities along the way, Ben Lomond demands preparation and respect.
What Makes This Hike Special?
You’ll start the journey just minutes from Queenstown’s town center. Many hikers choose to ride the Skyline Gondola to cut out the initial climb and save their energy for the summit push. Alternatively, the Tiki Trail offers a forested route that connects to the main Ben Lomond Track.
Once you’re on the main trail, expect the landscape to open up dramatically. Rolling tussock hills give way to alpine ridgelines, with sweeping views of Lake Wakatipu, the Remarkables, and—on a clear day—Mount Aspiring in the distance.
Although the peak feels like a destination, remember: it’s only the halfway point. You’ll need just as much focus and stamina for the descent.

Know Before You Go
To fully enjoy the hike and stay safe, keep the following in mind:
Start Early and Allow Plenty of Time
This is a full-day hike. Begin in the morning to make the most of daylight, and pack a headtorch in case you take longer than expected.
Dress and Pack for All Conditions
The weather in this area can change in minutes—even in summer. Be sure to bring:
- Waterproof layers and warm clothing
- Sun protection
- Plenty of food and water
- A map or GPS
- A first-aid kit
In winter, the trail turns alpine. You’ll need snow gear, crampons, and experience in alpine travel.
Stay on the Walking Track
Several steep mountain bike trails cross the area. These are unsafe for hikers, so follow the orange markers and trail signs carefully. Animal tracks can also mislead you—stick to the official route.
Hazards and Fire Restrictions
Ben Lomond lies within the Queenstown Red Zone, a region with high fire risk. Fires are banned year-round, so leave the matches and camp stoves at home.
Be aware that hypothermia can occur even on warm days, especially if you get caught in wind or rain near the summit. If weather conditions deteriorate, don’t hesitate to turn back.
Amenities and Toilets
You’ll find restrooms at the top of the Skyline Gondola and another basic toilet roughly 100 meters before Ben Lomond Saddle. However, there’s no toilet paper, water, or hand sanitizer, so come prepared.
Consider bringing a pocket toilet, available from the Whakatipu-wai-Māori/Queenstown Visitor Centre, especially if you’re venturing beyond the saddle.
And remember: carry out all your rubbish. The track is beautiful—let’s keep it that way.
Make the Most of Your Trip
The Ben Lomond Track is a hike that leaves a lasting impression. Yes, it’s challenging. But the panoramic views from the summit, the variety of landscapes, and the sense of accomplishment are more than worth the effort.
