Travelers searching for a unique wildlife experience in Hawke’s Bay should not miss Cape Sanctuary. Located on the stunning Cape Kidnappers peninsula, this conservation project shows what’s possible when a passionate community restores nature on a grand scale.
Sixteen years ago, the Lowe and Robertson families teamed up to create Cape Sanctuary. Since then, they have transformed 2,500 hectares into a safe haven for native species. A 10-kilometre predator-proof fence now protects this vast coastal area.
So far, 19 native species have been reintroduced, and more than one million native trees have been planted. As a result, Cape Sanctuary has become New Zealand’s largest privately owned wildlife restoration area.
During the day, visitors can explore diverse landscapes filled with birdsong and native bush. Along the way, guides share stories about Māori history and cultural sites that bring the land’s past to life.
Afterward, guests pause for morning tea at a simple hut built by volunteers. From here, sweeping views stretch across Hawke’s Bay. Many find this spot perfect for taking photos and soaking up the sanctuary’s peaceful atmosphere.
In addition, every visit supports future conservation work. Profits help fund the planting of more trees and the reintroduction of native species.
Meanwhile, the night tour offers a completely different adventure. Small groups hop into a Can-Am vehicle and head into the forest after dark.
Soon, tiny glowworms light up the shadows, creating an otherworldly glow. However, the real highlight is searching for kiwi in the wild. With over 800 kiwi living here, guests have a good chance of spotting these shy nocturnal birds as they forage in their natural habitat.
Whether exploring by day or night, Cape Sanctuary welcomes solo travelers, couples, or larger groups. Smaller groups can join Can-Am tours, while larger parties can book through a partnership with Gannet Safaris Overland.
Therefore, everyone has a chance to see this restored landscape and its unique wildlife.
