Vintage Fly Fishing Travel Posters

Posters Used for Travel Promotion

Prior to the widespread adoption of television and digital media, travel posters were an art form and a powerful marketing tool for countries competing for potential visitors around the globe. Enlisting artists and some of the best printers available, they competitively designed eye-catching posters which captured the essence of their destinations. These images often depicted iconic landmarks bathed in warm hues, showcasing natural beauty or the energy of bustling cityscapes.

Fly Fishing as a Centerpiece to Tourism New Zealand’s Strategy

By strategically promoting New Zealand’s exceptional fly fishing opportunities, Tourism New Zealand aimed to establish the country as a premier destination for this sport. Even until recently, the country had active campaigns which helped lay the foundation for New Zealand’s reputation as an adventure tourism hotspot.

Although specific emphasis on fly fishing has waned in more recent times as Tourism New Zealand tries to attract more visitors in its winter months as well as focus on more broad messing, those in the know understand New Zealand continues to enjoy its place as a world-class fishery.

Tourism New Zealand Recognizes How Special Fly Fishing is in New Zealand

In the aftermath of World War II, many countries looked to tourism to revitalize their economies. New Zealand was no exception, and its tourism board, Tourism New Zealand, recognized a growing interest in recreational activities like fly fishing.

This fit perfectly with New Zealand’s natural beauty and its un-pressured rivers packed with rainbow and brown trout. Seizing the opportunity, Tourism New Zealand launched a campaign in the 1940s and 1950s specifically aimed at attracting international fly fishing enthusiasts and used beautiful posters to help promote the country.

images of a Fly Fishing Paradise

Tourism New Zealand’s promotional efforts for fly fishing painted the country as an angler’s paradise, and rightfully so (for those who have had the pleasure to fish in New Zealand). They emphasized the gin-clear waters, the abundance of large trout, and the chance to experience fly fishing amidst stunning scenery.

Brochures and advertisements showcased towering mountains reflected in crystal-clear streams, with an angler knee-deep in the water, proudly displaying a freshly caught trout. This imagery targeted fly fishing enthusiasts, particularly those in North America and Europe, where the sport was already popular.

We have to admit, these images still are attractive and remind us of our own memories of fishing in New Zealand.
