New Zealand Walks

Best Walks Near Tongariro National Park

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing earns its reputation as one of New Zealand’s greatest day walks. But not every day is a Crossing day. Sometimes the weather closes in, your legs need a rest, or you simply want to see something different. If you’re staying at Tongariro Lodge or making a day trip down from Taupō, you have excellent options that don’t require summit-level fitness or a predawn alarm.

These six walks range from a gentle 20-minute stroll to a full-day adventure through remote forest. All of them deliver the raw volcanic drama that makes the Central North Island so extraordinary. Here’s what you need to know before you lace up your boots.

Tama Lakes Track via Taranaki Falls

If you’re looking for the closest alternative to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing in terms of scale and scenery, this is it. The Tama Lakes Track starts at Whakapapa Village on the same route as the Taranaki Falls Walk, then pushes further into the volcanic interior to reach Lower Tama Lake.

The track crosses undulating tussock country and alpine herb fields before arriving at Tama Saddle, where views of Lower Tama Lake, Mt Ngauruhoe, and Mt Ruapehu open up in front of you. It involves less uphill walking and less exposure to alpine conditions than the Crossing, making it a smart choice when the high-altitude weather looks uncertain.

A note for confident hikers: there is a rough side trip from the saddle to Upper Tama Lake viewpoint, though DOC rates this as an advanced track. The route is steep, unformed, and exposed, so only attempt it in clear conditions.

Keep in mind that this is still an alpine environment. Check the forecast before you go and carry warm, waterproof layers regardless of how the morning starts.

Taranaki Falls Walk

This loop walk is one of the most rewarding short walks in the national park, and it earns every bit of its popularity. Starting from Whakapapa Village, the lower section of the track winds through tussock and alpine shrubland before dropping into mountain beech forest. On clear days, the symmetrical cone of Mt Ngauruhoe fills the skyline.

The forest section leads down to Wairere Stream and alongside it past Cascade Falls. The birdlife here is active and often audible before you spot it. Whiteheads, grey warblers, and riflemen are regularly seen among the large mountain beech trees.

The highlight is Taranaki Falls itself, where the stream drops 20 metres over the edge of an ancient andesite lava flow that erupted from Ruapehu around 15,000 years ago. After the falls, the track climbs 100 steps before joining the Tama Lakes Track and looping back through red tussock and volcanic pumice to the village.

This track is also part of the Te Araroa Trail, New Zealand’s 3,000-kilometre long-distance walking route. The full loop is comfortable for most fitness levels and covers a genuinely varied range of terrain and views.

Tawhai Falls Track

When time is short or energy is low, Tawhai Falls delivers. The track is located about 4 km from the Tongariro National Park Visitor Centre on SH48 and leads down through native bush to a viewing platform near the top of the falls.

From the platform, you watch the river drop over the lip of an ancient lava flow in a clean, theatrical plunge. An additional set of steps continues to the river’s edge, where you get a wider view of the gorge and a more distant look at the falls. The rocks at the water’s edge can be slippery, so take care if you head all the way down.

This is a great option to pair with one of the longer walks on this list, or to tack onto a drive through the park. Because it’s a popular stop, DOC recommends arriving early or later in the day to avoid competition for the small carpark.

Silica Rapids Walk

The Silica Rapids are genuinely unusual. As the stream emerges from lava cliffs at the head of the valley, it carries high concentrations of aluminium and silicate minerals. When the water aerates and speeds up over the shallow streambed, those minerals precipitate out and coat the rocks in a layer of creamy white. The effect is striking and unlike anything else in the park.

The walk to reach them is equally varied. Starting near Whakapapa Village, the track follows a mountain stream through beech forest, passes ironoxide-stained pools left by upstream swamps, and crosses a boardwalk over a swampy area where freshwater crayfish (kōura) live in the seepage ponds. The boardwalk section offers excellent mountain views on a clear day.

Further up, the track passes Punaruku Falls before reaching the open alpine zone where snow tōtara and bog pine give way to mountain daisies, harebells, and other high-country flowers. The loop returns to Whakapapa Village via Bruce Road.

This is a strong choice if you want a walk that combines forest, water features, and alpine scenery without committing to a long day on your feet.

Tupapakurua Falls Track

For those who want to earn their waterfall, the Tupapakurua Falls Track delivers. This walk is located near National Park Village (also known as Waimarino), and it leads through regenerating podocarp forest to a falls that feel genuinely remote.

The track begins with an easy 20-minute walk to the Taranaki Lookout, which offers views toward Mt Taranaki on one side and back to Mt Ruapehu and Hauhungatahi on the other. Beyond the lookout, the terrain becomes more demanding. The track follows a ridge before descending steeply around 230 metres to the stream, and the path can be slippery after rain.

At the bottom, the falls plunge to the valley floor in dramatic fashion, surrounded by mature rimu, miro, tōtara, and tawa. The diversity of the forest on the way back up, with its views through gaps in the canopy to the surrounding bluffs, makes the climb feel worthwhile.

DOC maintains the track to the lookout only. Beyond that point, walkers should be comfortable in rougher conditions. This one is best suited to confident hikers who want a less-visited experience.

Whakapapaiti Valley Track

The Whakapapaiti Valley Track is the option for walkers who want a full day in the wilderness and a real sense of getting away from the crowds. The track starts from Whakapapa Village along the Silica Rapids route, then branches off into the valley, winding through stunted beech forest and open tussock before reaching Whakapapaiti Hut.

Depending on recent rainfall, there is an unbridged river crossing in the upper valley. Check conditions at the Tongariro National Park Visitor Centre before you set out, and treat any fast-moving water with caution. If the river is running high, turn back rather than attempt the crossing.

From the hut, the track continues to the Round the Mountain Track junction and climbs over a moraine ridge before descending to the Bruce Road, approximately 5 km above Whakapapa Village. The views from the ridge across the valley and toward the surrounding volcanic landscape are excellent.

Like the Taranaki Falls Walk, this track forms part of the Te Araroa Trail. It’s a serious outing that rewards walkers who appreciate quiet forest, open tussock country, and the kind of volcanic scenery that only Tongariro delivers.

Planning Your Day in the Park

All six of these walks sit within a short drive of Tongariro Lodge and are accessible as day trips from Taupō. Before you head out, stop in at the Tongariro National Park Visitor Centre in Whakapapa Village. The team there can tell you about current track conditions, river levels, and weather forecasts. Alpine conditions can change quickly even in summer, so that five-minute conversation is always worth having.

Carry more layers than you think you’ll need, bring plenty of water, and wear footwear with grip. Even the easier tracks here cross volcanic terrain that behaves differently from a typical bush walk.

If you’d like help building a Central North Island itinerary that includes time in Tongariro alongside your other New Zealand plans, our team is ready to do exactly that.
