Spotlight on Russell, Bay of Islands

Located on a peninsula in the eastern Bay of Islands, Russell, also known as Kororareka, invites travelers to uncover its rich history and vibrant culture. This seaside village, once a bustling hub for whalers and traders, has evolved into a peaceful retreat that honors its past while embracing the present. It was here that the first Europeans settled in New Zealand and where many of historic buildings can still be visited. The town streets retain their original layout and names from 1843.  Join us as we take a leisurely stroll through the charming streets of Russell, where every corner reveals a story waiting to be told.

A Piece of New Zealand’s Heritage

Russell’s story began centuries ago, as the indigenous Ngare Raumati people thrived in harmony with the land and sea. With the arrival of European settlers, the town flourished as a coastal trading post, brimming with activity and maritime tales.

Once referred to as the “Hell hole of the Pacific” this town now celebrates the term (tongue-in-cheek) and despite its lively past, modern Russell has since transformed into a tranquil haven where historic buildings and scenic vistas offer a glimpse into its storied past.

Preserving the Past at the Russell Museum

At the heart of Russell lies the Russell Museum, a treasure trove of artifacts and anecdotes that celebrate the town’s rich heritage. Established as a community endeavor in 1940, the museum continues to enchant visitors with its curated collections and interactive exhibits. From tales of early settlers to glimpses of daily life in yesteryears, the Russell Museum offers a delightful journey through time for curious minds of all ages.

The Duke

After exploring the town take a walk up to Flagstaff Hill Historic Reserve – where you will be rewarded with a magnificent 360-degree view of the Bay of Islands. Take time to relax, have a drink and a bite to eat, at New Zealand’s oldest licensed hotel, The Duke of Marlborough, located right on the waterfront.

Waitangi Treaty Grounds

Just a short distance from Russell lies the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, a sacred site where history was made and partnerships were forged. Every first-time visitor to the Bay of Islands should visit, as it is one of the most important historic sites in New Zealand, where the Treaty of Waitangi (New Zealand’s founding document) was signed.

The Treaty Grounds feature museums, Māori cultural performances, guided tours, native forest and gardens, an art gallery, and a carving studio to discover. Explore the Treaty House, witness cultural performances at Te Whare Rünaga, and reflect at the iconic flagstaff where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed. A visit to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds is a humbling experience, reminding us of the importance of unity, respect, and understanding in our shared journey forward.
